On the Gospel of Matthew 25:1-13
32nd Sunday of the Year
This Gospel, taken from Matthew 25:1-13, presents us with a parable about bridesmaids who are awaiting the coming of a bridegroom and an imminent Marriage. Marriage is a very prominent image in the Bible and is normally used to signify the relationship which God seeks to have with His Church, often referred to as the Bride of Christ. This relationship between Christ and the Church is most clearly shown in the Crucifixion and death of our Lord. In dying on the Cross for our redemption, Jesus performs the ultimate act of love for us, where he gives up his life in a perfect gift of self-sacrifice.

Feast day: 3rd of November

Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru, in 1579 of John, a Spanish nobleman, and Anna Velasquez, a freed slave. As a boy he studied medicine which later, as a member of the Order, he put to good use in helping the poor. Martin was received as a servant at the priory of the Holy Rosary in Lima where he was finally admitted to profession as a co-operator brother in 1603. In his life of prayer, Martin was especially devoted to the Blessed Sacrament and to the passion of our Lord. He was noted for his care of the poor and the sick. He died at Lima on November 3, 1639.

The Church never forgets you. Over the course of the year we will pray for every portion and class of humanity, no matter where or in what difficulty or sorrow. Jesus Christ took on the full burden of human experience in his life and during his passion, and so now his Church too must look to the needs of all its members.

On the Gospel of Matthew 23:1-12
31st Sunday of the Year

The Gospel this week speaks about the difference between 'to preach' and 'to practice'. Jesus is addressing the people and his disciples and tells them that they should respect the authority which the Pharisees had by virtue of 'the chair of Moses'. By the chair of Moses, Jesus means the authority to explain and interpret the teachings of Moses, or the Law as we can also call it. However, Jesus continues to explain that while respecting the authority of the Pharisees the people should not imitate how they actually apply what they teach to their own lives, as the way they live does not reflect what they teach.
