On the Gospel of Matthew 16:21-27
I recently returned from a Dominican pilgrimage to Madrid for World Youth Day: an enormous gathering of young Catholics from all over the world. There, there was a spirit of flag-waving enthusiasm, of sincere devotion, and, above all, of joy. ‘This is like a preview of the Kingdom’, one of my pilgrims commented at one point, and I could see what she meant - wherever you looked there were smiles that wordlessly proclaimed, ‘Christ is risen!’ These young people looked redeemed!

Lay Dominican and Virgin, Memorial
Isabella Flores, commonly known as Rose, was born in Lima, Peru, in 1586, and became the first canonized saint of the Western Hemisphere. She made a vow of virginity at an early age and only with great difficulty overcame the objections and misunderstanding of her family to her way of life. At the age of twenty she became a Dominican Tertiary and lived in a hermitage which she had set up in her family's garden. She practiced severe penances for the salvation of sinners and for the missionary efforts of the Church in the Indies. Her great love for Christ manifested itself by her care of and concern for the poor and sick. She had a special devotion to Christ in the Eucharist and to Mary, the Mother of God. Her desire to teach others the secret of prayer made her a zealous promoter of the Rosary. She died at Lima on August 24, 1617.

Gospel of Matthew 16:13-20
Jesus says to Peter ‘You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church’. This was the first line that struck me when reading the Gospel passage for the twenty-first week in ordinary time. It was, actually, the Greek word for Church (ἐκκλησία), which can also be translated as congregation or assembly, which drew my attention in a particular way. It strikes me that it is so often forgotten that we are all part of the Church, part of the ‘Body of Christ’ as St. Paul repeatedly tells us. It seems, especially here in Ireland, that it is often forgotten that the Church is all the people of God and not just the hierarchy. While Jesus is very firm here that the Pope is the head of the Church, and has the authority to lead it, it is all the faithful together who make up the Body. And this is something to be clearly seen at World Youth Day which is underway at the moment in Madrid, Spain, where hundreds of thousands, even millions of young people from around the world gather together to celebrate their faith!

On the Gospel of Matthew 15:21-28
‘But who do you say that I am?’ (Mark 8:29). This question, which Jesus puts to his disciples, is one that is still addressed to us today, and the answer we give will have a great influence on our reading of Scripture. Who is Jesus Christ? Was he a good man, who helped people and gave useful advice for life? Was he a prophet, who spoke boldly against religious and political authorities? Or is he the Christ, the Son of the living God?
