This is a recording of the homily given by Fr. John Harris OP (Regent of Studies) at the Mass celebrated for the Studium in Dublin, on the Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas (28 Janaury, 2012).
Among other things, Fr. John said: " To sit with him only at our desks and not to kneel with Saint Thomas in adoration is to fail to know Aquinas or to practice seriously the art of theology."

St Catherine of Siena: You Have Shown Us Love in Your Blood
St Catherine had great devotion to the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ, poured out on the Cross for love of us. For her, the blood of Christ is a visible sign of God’s great love for us. Here we hear a prayer first addressed to Christ, then an exhortation to address herself. She advises herself: ‘the more you see, the more you will love’.

Jesus of Nazareth is the long-awaited Saviour. He knows this himself and he lets it be known by his actions and by his words. In this particular Gospel passage, the characterisation of Jesus as authoritative teacher and preacher is deepened and given durative extension across the narrative. The conclusion is a complex one and tends to be the focus of the story. The departure of Jesus from the crowd characterises him in terms of prayer and preaching. Indeed, his going out to preach with his disciples orients the narrative portrait of Jesus away from crowds and miracles and toward his more ultimate destiny.

St Catherine de' Ricci OP
Feast Day: 4th February
Alexandra de' Ricci was born of a noble family near Florence in 1522. At the age of twelve she entered the Dominican convent of St Vincent at Prato and took the religious name Catherine. Inspired by the Dominican reformer Girolamo Savonarola she worked constantly to promote the regular life. She was favoured with extraordinary mystical experiences and at the age of twenty began to experience the sacred stigmata and weekly ecstasies of the Passion. These phenomena continued for twenty years. Despite her intense mystical life of prayer and her penance, Catherine served as prioress of the convent for thirty-six years. She was noted as a kind and considerate superior, particularly gentle with the sick. She died on February 2, 1590 (from the Dominican Supplement for the Liturgy of the Hours).

St Catherine of Siena: O Mary, Bearer of the Fire
We hear today a long prayer addressed by St Catherine to Mary, the Mother of God. She prayed this prayer on the feast of the Annunciation the year before she died, and in it she wonders about what it was like for Mary to say Yes to what God was asking of her. ‘You were overtaken by wonder and surprise’, Catherine says. She offers many original images for our Blessed Mother: she is the bearer of fire, the seedbed of the fruit, a peaceful sea, fertile soil, a new-sprung plant, and many more things besides!

St Catherine of Siena: Make My Heart Big!
We hear today one of the prayers of St Catherine, addressed to God the Father. She speaks of the human heart, made big by God, but that we can grow cruel if we fail to understand how much we are loved by God, in Christ.
